Threading Threads of metal fasteners are usually created on a thread rolling machine. They may also be cut with a lathe, tap, or die. Rolled threads are stronger than cut threads, with increases of 10% to 20% in tensile strength and possibly more in fatigue resistance and wear resistance. Thread cutting, as compared to thread forming and rolling, is used when full thread depth is required, the quantity is small, the blank is not very accurate, threading up to a shoulder is required, threading a tapered thread, or the material is brittle.

Please contact us to request any additional information or pricing. NUTS A nut is a type of hardware fastener with a threaded hole. Nuts are almost always used opposite a mating bolt to fasten a stack of parts together. The two partners are kept together by a combination of their threads friction, a slight stretch of the bolt, and compression of the parts. In applications where vibration or rotation may work a nut loose, various locking mechanisms may be employed: Adhesives, safety pins or lockwire, nylon inserts, or slightly oval-shaped threads. The most common shape is hexagonal, for similar reasons as the bolt head - 6 sides give a good granularity of angles for a tool to approach from (good in tight spots), but more (and smaller) corners would be vulnerable to being rounded off. Other specialized shapes exist for certain needs, such as wing nuts for finger adjustment and captive nuts for inaccessible areas*

RODS AND STUDS A threaded rod, also known as a stud, is a relatively long rod that is threaded on both ends; the thread may extend along the complete length of the rod. They are designed to be used in tension. Threaded rod in bar stock form is often called all-thread.

For studs that are not completely threaded, there are two types of studs: full-bodied studs, and undercut studs. Full-bodied studs have a shank equal to the major diameter of the thread. Undercut studs have a shank equal to the pitch diameter of the screw thread. Undercut studs are designed to better distribute axial stresses. In a full-bodied stud, the stresses are greater in the threads than in the shank.

Undercut studs (Rolled Thread) are also stronger because the metal is "rolled" up to the major diameter, not removed. This does not disturb the grain of the steel. Full-bodied studs (Cut Thread) are weaker because metal is removed to create the thread, disturbing the grain of the steel.

Undercut studs are only required in applications where the stud is exposed to fatigue.*

WASHERS AND PLATES A washer is a thin plate (typically disk-shaped) with a hole (typically in the middle) that is normally used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a screw or nut. Other uses are as a spacer, spring (Belleville washer, wave washer), wear pad, preload indicating device, locking device, and to reduce vibration (rubber washer). Washers usually have an outer diameter (OD) about twice the length of their inner diameter (ID).*

BOLTS A bolt is an externally threaded fastener designed for insertion through holes in assembled parts and is normally intended to be tightened or released by torquing a nut. A screw is an externally threaded fastener capable of being inserted into holes in assembled parts, mating with a preformed internal thread or forming its own thread, and being tightened or released by torquing the head. An externally threaded fastener that is prevented from being turned during assembly and which can be tightened or released only by torquing a nut is a bolt. (Example: round head bolts, track bolts, plow bolts.) An externally threaded fastener that has a thread form that prohibits assembly with a nut having a straight thread of multiple pitch lengths is a screw*
